Succeeded by left-wing vice-president In 1960 Janio Quadros was elected the 22nd president of Brazil, representing the National Democratic Union Christian Party, but resigned after several months putting his country into constitutional crisis. Joal Goulart took over the president job.

First Women President- In 2010, Dilma Rousseff becomes Brazil's first female president. She was elected after two rounds of balloting since the first vote, the candidates didn’t reach over 50 % of the votes. She won the second round with a 56% over her opponent José Serra.
2011
A series of floods and mudslides hit the towns of Rio de Janeiro killing at least 974 people and causing over 1,700 to evacuate from their houses in January, 2011. In the period of two days from the 11th to the 12th of January, there was more rainfall than an entire months worth. The floods cut off utilities like electricity, running water and phone lines.
